The Whitstable Literary Festival Present...
Mr Maugham At Home
Thursday 8 May - 7.45pm

The WhitLit Festival present Anthony Smee delivering the performance of a lifetime in this hugely entertaining one-man drama of the life of William Somerset Maugham written by Anthony Curtis.

One of the Twentieth Century's best-selling authors, W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was born in Paris but spent his formative years in Whitstable, which became the 'Blackstable' of two of his most well known novels; Of Human Bondage and Cakes & Ale.

Playwright Anthony Curtis brings the panorama of Maugham's life to the stage with an extraordinary performance by Smee; the stricken child, the student in Heidelberg, the doctor in Lambeth's slums, the struggling writer in Paris, the stretcher-bearer on the battlefields of World War I and, incredibly, the international spy. Finally, after glittering success, the tragedy of a life ending in misery, paranoia and social opprobrium.

This highly acclaimed play has received rave reviews across the board from The Times and The Stage, and this one-off performance in Whitstable is not to be missed!
